Open Enrollment for School Choice FAQs
Option schools are open to all families in Seattle with priority given to kids with siblings at the school already and those living within the small geozone around TOPS.
Families who are interested in applying to TOPS must submit their application for school choice between January 5-31, 2026.
You can learn more about the school choice process here and see statistics on how many families apply and are accepted via the lottery.
The district will not proactively inform families of their assignment. Assignments are viewable on The Source and Assignment Lookup Tool the week of February 24, 2026.
Applications are ranked based on sibling priority; Geo-zone priority; Lottery number priority. The lower the number, the higher the ranking for placement. Anecdotally, in most recent years all siblings and geo-zone families have received placement at TOPS and the majority of families who apply get a spot.
Kindergarten: in 2025, 44 kids applied for 35 spots. Approximately 16 of those were siblings and/or geozone assignments.
Sixth grade: in 2025, 26 kids applied for 15 spots. Three of those were siblings and/or geozone assignments.
If a family is offered a place off of the waitlist, they will have 24-48 hours to accept. In this case the district will proactively inform them of the assignment.
